I inherited this book from my mother when I was a child and we both loved it. The story is set in Edwardian times and is about a young girl who is sent to her godmother's property in the West of England to recuperate after long illness. Her elderly godmother lives in a beautiful old house and garden where Sylvia finds its magic secrets and is transported on adventures to other times and places. It is a delightful book for primary school age girls. I particularly love the Edwardian, art nouveau influence on the style of the book and illustrations. As it is so rare now, I will be getting my somewhat battered copy repaired to pass on to my granddaughter.
